2015 Truchas Annual Banquet

Dear Friends:

The Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited (718) will hold its annual banquet on March 14, 2015 at the Hotel Santa Fe Hacienda and Spa in Santa Fe, NM. As always, we will begin the evening with cocktails at 5:00 PM with dinner, fun, and excitement to follow.

We are very excited to have Bill Edrington as our guest speaker this year. Bill has owned Royal Gorge Anglers in Canon City, CO for 16 years and has been fly fishing for over 40 years, mostly in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. He has authored over a dozen articles on fly fishing the Arkansas River, fly fishing caddis hatches and fly fishing instruction. His writings have appeared in Fly Fisherman MagazineFly Rod and ReelAmerican Angler, and Fly Fish America.  He currently writes the fishing reports for each quarterly issue of High Country Angler. His recent book, Fly Fishing the Arkansas, has become a “must have” for those interested in fishing southern Colorado. He has appeared on ESPN Outdoors and is featured fishing the caddis hatch on Colorado’s Major Six DVD by Marty Bartholemew.  Bill conducts over 20 seminars a year on fishing the lifecycle of the caddis and fishing Arkansas River hatches. Bill’s talk will be a conservation story of how hard work turned the Arkansas River, which had heavy metal mining contamination until 1993, into the #1 fished river in Colorado and, at the same time, the #1 whitewater recreation river in North America in just 20 years. The Arkansas gained Gold Medal status last year with over 5,000 fish per mile for over 100 miles, making it the longest stretch of Gold Medal water in the southern Rockies.

Our Grand Raffle features three amazing prizes and the checker board prize features a one of a kind bamboo rod from ZIA RODS.  This special bamboo fly rod has been made in "Santa Fe style" with turquoise, gold and silver and will only be available to banquet attendees.

The Truchas Chapter’s Grand Raffle tickets and our annual banquet are the primary sources of revenue to help us pursue activities that improve the condition of the watersheds and cold water fisheries in northern New Mexico through restoration projects, education and advocacy.  These activities include participating in riparian area improvement and protection projects including Red River fish habitat improvement project near Questa, protecting and rehabilitating riparian areas along the Pecos River, and wetland restoration in the Comanche Creek watershed.  Our educational activities include fish fiestas, river cleanups, Trout-in-the-Classroom (TIC) programs in Santa Fe and Albuquerque schools, and funding a native fish exhibit at the new Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in Los Alamos.  We continue our advocacy efforts to protect and restore Rio Grande cutthroat trout populations, support erosion mitigation efforts in Simon Canyon on the San Juan River, improve winter flows and implement catch-and release regulations for the Chama River, and supporting efforts to fight any proposals that might restrict or prevent access to public lands.

Please show your support for the Truchas Chapter by buying Grand Raffle tickets and attending the banquet.

CANCELLED...........Rio Cebolla Fencing Project

EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Rio Cebolla Fencing Project with NM Trout on May the 31th.

Saturday May 31 along the Rio Cebolla in the Jemez:  Construct fencing in a meadow area to keep cows off of the streambanks.  This part of the Rio Cebolla was known as a excellent trout stream but has been subsequently degraded by uncontrolled cattle grazing.  We are teaming with the Bosque Chapter, New Mexico Trout, the Albuquerque Wildlife Federation, and The Nature Conservancy on what we hope is a multi-year project to restore this area.  Contact Art Vollmer, fish4rgct@gmail.com or 474-1495, to volunteer.

More details to follow.
